Biography
Mr. Thornton is Chairman of Barrick Mining Corporation, Chairman of The Asia Society, Chairman of PineBridge Investments, and Chairman of RedBird Capital Partners. He retired in 2003 as President and member of the Board of The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. He serves as Lead Independent Director of Ford Motor Company and as Lead Director of Lenovo Group Limited and Avathon.
He is Chair Emeritus of the Board of Trustees of the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. He is a Professor and Director of the Global Leadership Program at the Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management in Beijing.
Mr. Thornton is a trustee, advisory board member, or member of the China Investment Corporation, China Securities Regulatory Commission, Council on Foreign Relations, McKinsey Advisory Council, Schwarzman Scholars, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, and Morehouse College.
Mr. Thornton holds an undergraduate degree from Harvard College, a degree in jurisprudence from Oxford University, and a master's degree from the Yale School of Management. He has served on the boards of many of the world's largest companies, including Intel, ICBC, China Unicom, IMG, BSkyB, DirecTV, News Corp, HSBC, and Paramount Skydance Corporation.
